Pie Crust Recipe

“Here is a good lard pie crust recipe to use for all of your favorite pies. This recipe takes a little time, but anything good in life generally takes time, so give it a try and let us know what you think. ”

1/2 square lard
1 1/2 tsp salt
3 cups flour
1/2 cup water


Gently rub hands together holding the lard and picking up flour. Continue doing this until it is mixed together pretty well (should look like feta cheese when ready). Then mix in water by had. Flour a surface well and roll out, turning often to keep from sticking. Roll to a poster board thickness. Put in a pie dish and cut off edges. Roll top piece out and place on top of pie (if it has a top crust). Cut edges and slit top if necessary. Use your fingers to create texture on edge of crust. Brush top with milk and liberally sprinkle with sugar.

If your pie requires a pre-baked shell, prick bottom crust and bake at 475 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. If you have leftover dough, you make cookies out of them. Brush with milk and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar or just sugar.

    How much is a half square of lard (by weight)? We rendered our own lard and so don’t have a square, we have a quart jar…
